Avast! antivirus is the multi-award winning antivirus program developed by ALWIL Software
a.s. based in Prague, Czech Republic. It was first released in 1988 and was one of the
first on-access antivirus programs to be released for Windows x64 edition. avast! antivirus
is based on a central scanning engine which is certified by ICSA Labs[1] and West Coast
Lab's Checkmark process[2]. It incorporates anti-spyware technology, also certified by West
Coast Lab's Checkmark process[3], as well as anti-rootkit and strong self-protection
capabilities. It is a multiple recipient of the Virus Bulletin VB100 Award, for detection
of 100% of "in-the-wild" viruses[4] and is a past winner of the Secure Computing Readers'
Trust Award[5].
In August 2008, avast! antivirus was awarded the maximum "Advanced+" rating by the
independent testing company AV Comparatives[6].
avast! Home Edition is the popular freeware version of avast! antivirus available to
Microsoft Windows and Linux users, while avast! Professional Edition provides additional
capabilities for those businesses and users that need them. avast! Professional Edition
contains an enhanced user interface, through which scanning tasks can be scheduled to run
automatically, while priority updates are delivered automatically using the avast! PUSH
update technology. Both versions can be downloaded free of charge from avast.com for a
free 60-day trial period in over 30 language versions.
avast! antivirus is one of the most widely used antivirus programs in the world, with more
than 75 million users worldwide as of February 2009. The free Home Edition has been
downloaded more than 39 million times from the download website Download.com where it is
rated by users at 4.5 stars out of a possible 5[7]. avast! antivirus has also been
developed to support the Mac and all other significant computing platforms.
While avast! is primarily aimed at preventing infection by all types of computer threats,
including those that are not technically computer viruses such as spyware and other rogue
software, it can also recover malware-damaged files through its Virus Recovery Database.
